Our privacy promise
These are product choices and documented defaults. When cloud features are enabled, we spell out what gets sent and to whom.
Cloud features are optional
Core local workflows stay on your device. Cloud transcription, sync, and managed AI are opt-in.
No AI training on your content
Char does not use your meeting content to train models. If you use external providers, their handling follows their own policies.
Account optional
You can use local workflows without an account. Sign in only if you want cloud features such as sync or managed services.
Telemetry controls
Usage analytics can be disabled in Settings. Meeting audio, transcript text, notes, and summaries are excluded.
You own your data, completely
With Char, data ownership isn't a marketing term—it's a technical reality. Your data lives on your device, in formats you control.
Local storage
Core notes, transcripts, and recordings live as local files on your computer by default. No proprietary format and no required hosted storage.
Full export
Export all your data anytime in standard formats. Your notes, transcripts, and recordings are always accessible and portable.
True deletion
When you delete something, it's gone. No hidden backups, no retention periods, no "soft deletes" that keep your data around.
Optional sync, your choice
If you configure sync or other cloud features, data is sent over encrypted connections and handled according to that provider flow. If you do not configure them, your data stays local.
No content profiling
We do not sell your meeting data or use it to build advertising profiles. Meeting content is not the product.
No AI training on your data
Char does not use your transcripts or notes to train models. If you use cloud providers, their data handling follows their own policies.
Analytics controls
Char collects anonymous usage analytics by default to improve the product, and you can turn them off in Settings. Meeting content is excluded.
No data monetization
We make money by building a great product, not by selling your data. Your information is never shared with advertisers, data brokers, or any third parties.
Verify, don't trust
We don't ask you to take our word for it. Char is fully open source, so you can verify every privacy claim yourself.
